- By 1986 Freud had started using the word "psychoanalysis" to describe his process of free association and dream interpretation, as well as the theory behind it.

- Freud was a proponent of cocaine as a stimulant as well as analgesic.
- He believed that cocaine was a cure for many mental and physical problems.
- The concept of the unconscious was central to Freud's account of the mind.
- He postulated a cycle in which ideas are repressed, but remain in the mind, removed from consciousness yet operative, then reappear in consciousness under certain circumstances.
- Freud believed that the function of dreams is to preserve sleep by representing as fulfilled wishes that would otherwise awaken the dreamer.
- Freud proposed that the human psyche could be divided into three parts: Id, ego and super-ego.
- Freud died around midnight on September 23, 1939.
